Mercer Island

Upper Luther Burbank ParkUrban Parks are Valuable to People and Wildlife

Mercer Island is graced with 35 parks, open space areas boasting over 400 acres, and more than 50 miles of trails.  Despite their proximity to 20,000 local human residents, these urban parks also contain important habitat for wildlife.

Many species of migratory birds use the wetland area at lower Luther Burbank Park, and a Douglas squirrel, which is relatively rare in urban areas, was spotted by Greenway staff at Island Crest Park.  In addition to providing an escape for human residents, Mercer Island's parks can provide even more food and habitat for wildlife if the parks are kept healthy.

Volunteers have been improving these parks for many years, but much more work remains to be done.  Most of the time, volunteers dig up invasive plants that threaten the health of these beautiful natural areas.  Removing English ivy, blackberry, and other weeds creates more room for native plants on which wildlife depend.  Some native tree plantings may happen in the fall.

In 2008, the Greenway will host volunteer events at three sites: Upper Luther Burbank Park, Luther Burbank North Wetland, and Mercerdale Hillside Park.  Situated within the city landscape, these areas afford volunteers the unique opportunity to make positive contributions in places that need a lot of attention.  These "pockets" of natural space, bordered by development, are at high risk of being disturbed by invasive species and overuse.  Helping to protect and preserve these urban forests and wetlands is especially important, as they continue to provide habitat for native species as well as natural
sanctuaries for people looking to step away from the city.

Dozens of volunteers are needed to make these projects a success!  Check the current events calendar to see upcoming projects and sign up!
